Gotu Kola (Centella asiatica) is a low-growing herb native to wetlands in Asia, particularly found in tropical regions like India, China, Sri Lanka, and Southeast Asia. It is highly valued in both Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda for its positive effects on cognitive health, memory, and mental clarity. The leaves of this plant are typically brewed into tea, used in herbal blends, or made into tinctures for their wellness properties.

Known by various names such as Asiatic pennywort, Indian pennywort, and ji xue cao in Chinese, Gotu Kola has been used for thousands of years. In Ayurveda, it is considered tri-doshic, meaning it can help balance all three of the body’s energies (vata, pitta, and kapha), making it suitable for various individuals. It is believed to soothe mental turbulence, improve focus, and promote a calm mind.

Gotu Kola’s use in TCM dates back to the Shennong Herbal (1st-2nd century CE), where it was famously called the "fountain of life," inspired by a legend of an herbalist who lived for over 200 years due to his daily consumption of the herb. It is known for its cooling, sweet, bitter, and astringent qualities. The plant is also consumed fresh in many Asian countries, where it is used in salads or made into juices with ingredients like lime, chili, and coconut flakes.

This herb is a nourishing, calming, and cooling plant that has earned a reputation as an ally for supporting healthy brain function and overall mental well-being.
