Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum) is an annual herb from the pea family, native to the Mediterranean, India, and China. It has a sweet, slightly bitter flavor with a distinct maple-like aroma. Fenugreek seeds are used in Indian, Egyptian, and Middle Eastern cuisines, particularly in curries, teas, and baked goods.
Traditionally, fenugreek has supported digestion, lactation in nursing mothers, and is also used externally as a poultice. It has been used for thousands of years, appearing in the Ebers papyri (1500 B.C.E.) and is mentioned in both Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
In TCM, fenugreek is considered warming and is used to support the kidneys, lungs, and digestive system. In Ayurveda, it balances all three doshas and is used to stimulate appetite and relieve digestive discomfort. The seeds are also used to add flavor to foods, beverages, and cosmetics.
