Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) is a versatile plant with a long history as an edible food and restorative tonic. Its leaves, often consumed fresh in spring or brewed as tea, and the taproot, harvested in fall, have been used worldwide for their digestive, liver, and diuretic benefits.*

Native to Europe, Asia, and northern Africa, dandelion has been used in traditional medicine for centuries, including in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Arabian practices. Its bright yellow flower, resembling a sun, opens in the morning and closes in the evening, and its deep taproot is often gathered for its medicinal properties. Dandelion is commonly found in lawns and roadsides globally, including in areas like the Himalayas, and is cultivated commercially in Europe.

In the U.S., indigenous cultures valued dandelion for its gastrointestinal and cleansing properties. The Bella Coola used root decoctions for digestive issues, while the Algonquian ate leaves for their healing benefits. Dandelion was also used in poultices and teas for calming purposes by several Native American tribes.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, dandelion is considered sweet, drying, and cooling, believed to clear liver heat, support the stomach and lungs, and uplift the mood. The root’s inulin content makes it beneficial for digestion and appetite stimulation, and it is also listed in multiple pharmacopeias worldwide.

Dandelion greens are edible in salads or cooked like spinach, while the root is often used for its digestive toning and liver-supporting effects. Dandelion is valued for its cooling, bitter, and drying energetic properties.
